    Red face Sylheti na Bangladeshi?

Being born, bought up or emigrated in the West, how do you feel about your Deshi identity? As a British Sylheti I feel very close to our regional identity because it is so important in everyday life:

-We speak Sylheti in the UK (90% of Bangladeshis here are Sylheti and we have Channel S, various newspapers and airlines like Royal Bengal Tiger and Air Sylhet) and not Dhakaiya

-We have strong Sylheti diaspora community where we can intermingle/socialise

-We intermarry generally within our cultural group ie. Greater Sylhet

What are the important aspects of your Deshi identity living abroad and how do you translate regional identities alongside national and host country identities? I guess it's different in the US.

All the same to me, I am a bangali yet i'm Sylheti, we have this problem because historically we were part of Assam before we became part of Bengal.

hoow hoow hoow...nice but also a difficult topic...

someone said sylheti and someone Bangladeshi...i can understand them somehow...but what
    about the others??..some said..
    - banglali!!!???!!!
    - dhakaiya..
    - uk
    - us
    etc etc...
they r out of topic ..anyway... as a muslim point of view we MUST say that we r Muslim after that wht ever we like to say, i think its OK.....

but WHY compare with Sylhet and Bangladesh?? Is Sylhet already out of Bangladesh?? com on.... its really crazy to hear... Sylhet and Bangladesh cant be equal... if we think like Title and Subtitle... Bangladesh is Title and Sylhet is subtitle like Dhaka...Chittagong...

i think the question is unexceptable and meaningless-----

and wht abut BANGALIIII??? it is one of the redicilous thing what i hav to hear again and again but cant understand... what is bangali??? bangali means the people who talk with language BANGLA.... and thats include also the banglais of INDIA, and other countries... do u mean it?? i think u always mean Bangladeshi and it should be also Bangladeshi..cause there r also some other languages in BD.

    Default Bangali

    Agey porer kotha keno hochchey?
Why do we have to choose which one is first and which one is next and so on? It is irrelevant here.
Speaking for myself, I feel good about being a bengali and by that I mean being a native of Bangladesh as well as belonging to the larger bengali community.
Of course I feel strongly about my Muslim identity as well. As far as this forum is concerned I am happy to be identified as a bengali or bangali or bangalee, etc.

    Default What is your point?

What can't u understand when someone identifies himself as 'bengali' or 'bangali'? Why do you think that everyone has to look at the identity issue as you do? Using expressions such as "redicilous thing what i hav to hear again and again" does not make your argument any stronger if at all you have an argument here. You have to tell us what is 'redicilous' about it.

People nowadays have different identities. I have an Australian identity, a Bengali identity, a Muslim identity, among others. Which identity is foremost on your mind depends on the context and above all it is the individual's choice. Let us not forget that! - Shourobh

boys with toys... some of you talking like a rootless tree, you become a british by birth but where is your root, did you ever think where your perents from - white people will never treated you as like as them don't forgate.

Well Bangladesh or Sylhet? as you are in abroad it should be Bangladesh when you will be here in Bangladesh it should be Sylhet. If I ask you - U are human or british/Bangladeshi first, answer should be human. same way U r Muslim or British/Banglideshi first - answer is muslim.

So, do not complicate the simple answer. Think you are a human -Muslim- Bangladeshi than British or Sylheti.

OVER ALL BECOME A HUMAN FOR HUMAN
